Toyo Tires entered SCORE-International off-road racing in 2005 with the debut of the 37-inch Open Country M/T™ tire on Scott Steinberger’s 750-horsepower Ford Trophy Truck. Friend and fellow off-road racer, Robby Gordon, borrowed a set of the tires from Steinberger after a race in order to personally evaluate the product. Immediately impressed with the capabilities of the product, Gordon contacted Toyo and became the newest member of Team Toyo Off-Road with both his Chevy Trophy Truck and Hummer H3 DAKAR® racer. In 2006, Gordon and Toyo Tires enjoyed a remarkable year in SCORE, first by winning the Las Vegas Terrible’s Cup II short course stadium event in July in front of a near capacity grandstand crowd. The event consisted of intense 6-lap sprint races, Gordon dominating Saturday’s races by finishing 35-seconds ahead of the field, then backing that up with an incredible 23-second margin of victory over SCORE Trophy Truck regulars during the main event.
November of each year marks the crown jewel of SCORE-International off-road racing, the TECATE / SCORE Baja 1000. This grueling endurance classic is the most legendary off-road race in North America which has a worldwide audience. In 2006, Robby Gordon with navigator, Andy Grider; took their Chevy truck to the overall lead while driving the first 725-miles of the event. The veteran then handed the truck over to Andy McMillin, who completed the remainder of the race to become Winner of the 2006 Baja 1000. In only its second year of SCORE competition, Toyo Tires had won the pinnacle of off-road racing. Also competing in the 2006 Baja 1000 was Kent Kroeker, Landon Worthington and Loren Worthington of KORE/Worthington Racing who finished third in the Stock Full-size Class with their Dodge truck running on a set of production, off the shelf, 37x13.50R17 Toyo Open Country M/T tires. What was even more remarkable is that the tires they finished the race on were the same set that they used to pre-run the entire length of the course. As Kroeker stated, “We never experienced one flat, puncture or tear from our Open Country M/T’s during both pre-running and the race.” For 2007, Gordon, Steinberger and KORE return once again to SCORE competing on Toyo tires. New to Team Toyo Off-Road is Greer Brothers Racing with Bruce Greer, Jr., Glen Greer and Thomas Greer sharing duties in both their Dodge Trophy Truck and Class 8 trucks.
